Put to sleep in Irish pounds · tap a year

Four times more dogs put to sleep than in 2021.

Pounds must hold a dog for at least five days so its owner can claim it. After that, it can be put to sleep if space is needed. No law in Ireland, north or south, stops a healthy dog being put to sleep.

Who pays for rescue

The government pays a fraction. You pay the rest.

Most people think rescues are state-funded. Most of what they spend comes from the public: donations, fundraisers, charity shops and adoption fees. Every adoption frees a space. An animal waiting in a rescue costs money every day it stays; when it goes to a new home, that money and that kennel go to the next animal that needs it.

€6.4m

Total government grant to animal welfare charities in 2025, the highest ever.

94

Charities shared it. Many smaller rescues got nothing.
